Burn time and composition

Each candle is filled with 100% vegetable oil, sometimes called lamp oil or sanctuary oil. It is a traditional choice for grave candles: the oil burns evenly, with very little smoke, and holds its flame for the full duration. The casing is made from plastic and fiberglass, which gives the candle its solidity and makes it well suited to outdoor use. Day and night, for three days, it continues to burn.

The combination of plastic and fiberglass is specifically designed to withstand the conditions a grave candle faces outside. Rain and temperature changes do not affect the material. That said, position the candle somewhere sheltered from the wind. A draft can disturb or extinguish the flame, and a sheltered spot on the grave will give the best and most consistent result.
