That clay gives the piece its character: a subtly textured, earthy surface that remains visible in the finished work. Once modeled, the urn dries for two weeks before its first firing at 980 degrees, the biscuit stage. After 24 hours of cooling, it is submerged in a glaze bath and fired a second time, now at 1,220 degrees. The piece is then lacquered, bringing out the distinctive bronze tones of the robin's plumage in full. Every piece that moves through this process comes out differently. That is not a side effect of the method; it is the point of it.
