The paint is water-based, and the painters vary the ratio of paint to water to produce the characteristic gradations of blue you see across each piece. The color itself comes from cobalt oxide, mixed to a recipe that has remained essentially unchanged for centuries. During firing, beneath the glaze, what was painted in near-black transforms into the unmistakable Delft Blue. That shift is not accidental. It is the result of a process refined over hundreds of years, and it shows in the finished piece.
