A keepsake urn that carries a life's story

The 'Sailing' keepsake urn from Royal Delft is not a decorative object that happens to serve a practical purpose. It is a hand-painted piece of earthenware, made by master painters working within a tradition that has been passed down since 1653, and designed to hold a portion of someone's ashes with care and dignity.

Hand-painted Delft Blue: a craft centuries in the making

Every 'Sailing' urn is painted by hand in the Royal Delft studio in Delft. The panel painters begin by applying the outlines in charcoal, then build the detail freehand using brushes made from marten and squirrel hair. The paint is water-based, and the characteristic blue does not appear until the kiln. A pattern painted in black, using cobalt oxide, transforms through chemical reaction beneath the glaze into the deep, clear blue that defines Delft earthenware. This is not a process that can be mechanized. It takes practice, patience and precision, and you see that in every finished piece.

What the 'Sailing' motif holds

If you are looking for something that reflects who your person was, the image on the urn matters. The 'Sailing' motif was not chosen at random. The sea and open water speak to what is boundless, what moves freely, what lies beyond the horizon. If the person you are remembering loved the water, traveling, open space or simply the feeling of freedom, this image can keep something of that bond tangible and close.

A form that invites you to hold it

The urn has an organic shape that sits naturally in the hand. A blue seal at the base, together with a natural cork stopper, closes the urn securely. It is quiet enough to sit in an interior and present enough to be seen for what it is: a tribute.

Practical care and placement

Ceramic is a durable and stable material, but it deserves thoughtful placement. This mini urn for ashes is designed for indoor use only and is not suitable for outdoor settings or rooms with high moisture levels. Place it on a firm, level surface away from direct sunlight to preserve both the glaze and the painted decoration over time. The cork and seal closure is designed to keep the contents safe and secure for the long term.

A piece made only for this person

Beyond the existing collection, Royal Delft offers the option of a bespoke decoration. If you have a personal idea or a particular image in mind, that can be developed in conversation with one of the master painters into a design created specifically for you and for the person you are remembering. If you would like to explore this option, we are happy to talk it through with you.

The need to mark a loss with something physical, something you can place and return to, is as old as memory itself. This cremation urn offers a way to do that with the craft and care the occasion deserves. Take the time you need to look through the collection, and if you have questions about the 'Sailing' urn or about commissioning a bespoke piece, get in touch and we'll talk through the options at your own pace.
