A quiet endurance, holding what matters
Some things grow stronger with time rather than fading. The corten steel 'Tree of life' keepsake urn is built on that principle: a material that deepens and changes, shaped into a symbol that speaks to connection and continuity.
What corten steel actually is
Corten steel is a metal alloy combining iron, copper, phosphorus, silicon, nickel and chromium. That specific composition is not arbitrary. As the surface oxidizes, it forms a dense, stable oxide layer that actively protects the steel beneath from further corrosion. No painting or coating is needed. The urn can hold ashes with or without an ash bag.
The tree of life as a personal symbol
The tree of life is one of those symbols that earns its place through specificity rather than sentiment. Roots in a shared past. Branches reaching toward everything the person you are remembering left behind. If you give this urn a settled place in your home, you are also giving that meaning a place.
Understanding how corten steel behaves indoors
This mini urn for ashes is designed for indoor use. Corten steel has its own character as a material, and knowing what to expect removes uncertainty from the start.
The surface and how it changes
Our corten steel products are treated to accelerate the initial oxidation process. In the first weeks and months, the surface will show a vivid orange-brown color. This deepens and settles gradually over time. During the early stage, a loose surface layer may flake slightly. This is the mill scale formed during production and is completely normal. Any uneven color or minor marks at the outset will even out as the oxide layer matures. If the surface is ever scratched or damaged, a new oxide layer will form naturally and the color cycle will begin again. Cleaning is straightforward: water and mild soap is sufficient.
Placement and practical care
Because corten steel can release rust water during its early oxidation phase, the surface beneath the urn matters. Place it on a material that can withstand contact with rust residue, or use a suitable coaster or liner. Avoid placing the urn directly on porous stone or stainless steel. It is also worth ensuring there are no recesses or hollows around the urn where moisture could collect and sit, as standing moisture can accelerate corrosion in unintended ways.
A remembrance that changes as you do
This cremation urn is not an ornament. It is an object built to last, one that shifts in color and surface over the years and, in doing so, reflects something true: that remembering is not a fixed moment but something that continues.
If you have any questions about the urn, we're happy to talk it through with you at your own pace.
