What endures

Some things communicate more by doing less. This corten steel cremation urn has clean rectangular lines and nothing superfluous. What remains is an object that feels both settled and lasting.

Corten steel: a material that works from within

Corten steel is an iron-based metal alloy containing copper, phosphorus, silicon, nickel and chromium. What makes it distinctive is the rust-colored oxide layer that forms on the surface. Rather than weakening the steel, this layer protects it from within, slowing further corrosion to the point where painting becomes unnecessary. The urn does not need maintaining to stay as it is. It simply changes, gradually, at its own pace.

A shape that means something

The rectangular form goes back to basics. No ornament, no decoration. That simplicity can carry real meaning if you are looking for something that reflects a person who was straightforward and unpretentious, or if you yourself prefer stillness over elaboration. This is a full-size urn for ashes, suitable for the complete volume of an adult's ashes, and it accommodates both with and without an ash bag.

How the color develops

The patina forms when bare metal is exposed to moisture and oxygen. Our urns are treated to accelerate this process, so the color is already developing when it arrives. In the early stage the surface is a vivid orange-brown. Over time it deepens and darkens to a richer, more settled tone. Any uneven patches or variation during the initial phase are normal and tend to resolve as the patina matures. The surface can be cleaned simply with water and a mild soap. If the surface is scratched or damaged, a new protective layer will form naturally.

Placement and practical care indoors

This funeral urn is intended for indoor use. Although corten steel is often associated with outdoor architecture, it sits well in a considered interior setting. There are two things worth knowing before you place it. First, in the early stage a loose mill scale layer may flake from the surface. This is a normal part of the production process, not a fault. Place the urn on a surface you can wipe easily when it first arrives. Second, avoid porous stone surfaces such as unglazed slate or natural sandstone. Moisture carrying iron oxide can leave staining that is difficult to remove from absorbent materials.

Built to last

Corten steel forms are made by bending and welding sheet material, or by laser or waterjet cutting. Each method demands precision, and you can see that in the sharp corners and the sealed construction of this urn. The design avoids internal cavities that could trap moisture, because standing water would allow corrosion to continue in a way that defeats the material's protective properties.

Finding the right place for it

A corten steel cremation urn asks for a setting that gives it space. A windowsill, a shelf, a quiet corner of a room. The material and the form both reward a little breathing room around them.
