When farewell becomes the beginning of something living

Some forms of remembrance stay still. This one grows. The bamboo keepsake urn offers a way to return a portion of ashes to the earth and, in time, to see something grow from that place.

Bamboo: the material and why it matters

Each urn is shaped by hand from a bamboo trunk. Bamboo is fully biodegradable and stores considerably more CO2 than timber, making this one of the most ecologically considered choices available. Because every piece is worked by hand, no two urns are identical in grain, tone or character.

How to use the urn

The urn arrives with a coconut tablet (70 mm) containing starter nutrients and lavender seeds. Preparing it takes only a few straightforward steps:

  • Fill the urn with the cremation ashes
  • Place the coconut tablet on top and pour water over it so it expands
  • Bury the urn in the ground and cover it with soil
  • Growth appears after three to four weeks, with March to June being the best sowing period

A cover plate fits over the upper segment, creating a natural barrier between the seeds and the ashes beneath. Over the years, the bamboo gradually breaks down. As it does, the roots reach the ashes and absorb them. The tree grows from that.

Lavender, or a plant that meant something to them

Lavender returns each year. It is calm, persistent and recognizable by scent as well as sight, which makes the spot easy to find and easy to sit with. That said, the urn does not require lavender. You might choose to plant something that held personal meaning: an apple tree, a rose, an oak. The seeds included give you a starting point, but the choice of what grows there is entirely yours. That choice is what makes the place belong to the bond you shared.

Making it personal

The urn is designed to be buried outdoors, and beyond that, the decisions are yours. You choose the location, the planting and the timing. There is no prescribed way to do it. If you have a garden, a woodland, a favorite corner somewhere, the urn works wherever the ground will take it.

Practical things worth knowing

Bamboo degrades naturally over time. That is not a limitation of the material; it is the point. The breakdown process works with moisture and soil conditions rather than against them, so burial outdoors is exactly the environment this urn for ashes is made for. There is no need to protect it from the weather.

Volume, use and what this urn is suited to

This is a mini urn for ashes, not a full cremation urn. It holds a portion of ashes rather than a complete set, and is well suited to a child or a pet, or to someone who wishes to divide ashes between several resting places. If you are unsure whether this size is right for what you have in mind, it is worth checking before you order.

If you would like advice on planting choices or want to talk through how to make the spot feel right, we are happy to help you think it through at your own pace.
